Montana

* * *

Montana couldn't believe it. The two of them had agreed that now was the best time to tell their friends about Sunset Valley.

So, why didn't he do it? Why wouldn't he tell them? She managed to get through dinner without elbowing him, kicking him under the table, or making some obvious opening into which he could insert their big news. It was all she could do to not somehow force him to say something. But, she had put the situation in his hands.

That's because you trusted him to tell them. Even to her own mind, the voice in her head sounded like a spoiled princess, complete with a tiara, arms crossed, nose turned upward.

By the end of dinner, she was fuming. She felt him tense beside her when she volunteered them to do the dishes.

The whole group carried plates, platters, bowls, and glasses inside, but after a few minutes, everyone else went back out to enjoy the summer evening, leaving Montana alone with Sawyer in the kitchen.

As the sink filled with warm water, Sawyer handed Montana dishes.

"I guess you're wondering why didn't say anything."

"Yeah," Montana said, hating the way her voice sounded, almost belligerent.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I just couldn't do it. Trace is going to be so mad. I was sitting there thinking how perfect the evening was, and I didn't want to ruin it."

Dishrag in hand, Montana started scrubbing. Sawyer moved to her other side to rinse and dry.

“How little do you think of Trace?" she asked. "I mean, how badly do you think he would react on an evening as perfect as this?"

Sawyer considered. “It’s not only that. I mean, it is. He might temper his reaction here, when we’re all together. But later? When us guys are alone? He's going to let me have it."

“Yeah.” Montana said. Her heart beat faster, and she couldn’t tell if it was from emotions or a result of her over-vigorous scrubbing. “But haven’t you anticipated him letting you have it ever since you bought the property?”

“Yes. I have. But like I said, it’s also about the timing. I think we should wait until after the wedding."

"I disagree. The longer we keep the secret, the more it's going to hurt their feelings that we didn't tell them."

"You said that." Sawyer added another plate to the dry stack, a little harder than he probably meant to. He picked up the plate and checked the bottom for chips.

The conversation was getting to him. Montana felt a little guilty. Through the open window, she could hear the group outside, chatting and laughing.

Maybe Sawyer was right. Maybe they should wait till after the wedding.

“Look,” she said, drying her hands so she could take both of his. “I’m sorry. I understand. I disagree, but I understand.”

“Thank you,” he said, with a tone that implied that it wasn’t the last they’d talk about it. “Let’s get this done, so we can go out and enjoy our friends. Then, an early evening. I have something special planned for tomorrow.
